Did I mention we’re out in burbs at the moment? We’re staying with friends about an hour outside the city so I’m clocking up some serious train time. So far, I’ve realised that the way some Australians try and be subversive is to smoke on the trains and in the stations. Do you not get fined here?!
I also witnessed a disturbing display of racism on an evening train on Australia Day, when a man and his Asian wife/girlfriend were verbally attacked and spat at in front of their child for being in a mixed relationship. If that’s what Australian pride is, it’s nothing to be proud of. I’ve never seen anything like it before, but apparently it’s not that rare, and it reminded me of that video that went viral of the French girl being threatened in Melbourne. There’s also some footage on The Independent website at the moment that’s pretty shocking. I won’t go into details about the Australia Day incident though, because if I’m honest I don’t want to, it makes me too sad and angry.
On a happier note though, I’ve found a weekly train ticket that for AU$61 allows me to travel all over Sydney and take not just trains but buses and ferries as well. The MyMulti3 gives unlimited travel all the way out to the Hunter Valley and the Blue Mountains. I see some exploring in my future!

I always see kids out smoking in between the train cars..one of my greatest pet peeves, yet there never seem to be any train guards around…the my multi 3 is great value for the amount of places you can go, have fun!
Thanks so much for commenting. Good to know I’m not alone in being irritated. They mustn’t be fined often enough! Can’t wait to get out and about more with my trusty ticket.
